City Lights: News, notes and highlights from around the Public League, No. 6
I’m at the Chicago Elite Classic today gathering material for some future City Lights notebooks. Will have updates on two of the top girls teams in CPS — Kenwood and Simeon — as well as a few boys teams.
But for now, let’s catch up on the week’s hoops highlights:
Friday’s boys games
Lane 50, Taft 40: Sean Molloy had 14 points and five rebounds as Lane (5-1) won at the Chicago Elite Classic.
Legal Prep 74, Kennedy 59: Junior Damarjay Binion had a big game for Legal Prep: 30 points, nine steals, seven assists. Junior Keyontae Sykes added 12 points and senior Tyler Ford had 11 points and six rebounds.
Lincoln Park 83, Prosser 63: The Lions are 6-0 after putting six players in double figures: Richmond Ware with 13 points, Chickere Nwosu with 12, Caleb Spencer and Justin Bowen with 11, and Myan Whitfield and Christopher Hammonds with 10.
Friday’s girls games
Kenwood 97, South Shore 9: Kenwood cruised behind Whitney Dunn (31 points, rebounds, 2 steals), Jazlynn Givens (19 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals), Jazelle Young (12 points, 5 steals, 2 assists) and Diann Jackson (11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals).
Westinghouse 53, Lane 45: Freshman Jamilah Jackson had 28 points, four steals and three assists as Westinghouse moved to 7-0. Sophomore LaMonyca Bryant added 10 points and six rebounds, while Destiney Cox had nine points and 11 rebounds.
Thursday’s boys games
Bulls Prep 62, Speer 30: Two juniors led the way for Bulls Prep, as Curtis Owens scored 17 and Kameron Pointer had 12.
Lindblom 53, Perspectives-MSA 50: Sophomore Je’Shawn Stevenson paced Lindblom (4-2) with 17 points and six rebounds. Another soph, Quentin McCoy, had 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Also chipping in were seniors Reggie King (9 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals) and Zach Royster (9 points, 7 rebounds, 5 blocks).
Thursday’s girls games
Kenwood 70, St. Ignatius 50: Jazelle Young had 18 points and eight rebounds to lead Kenwood. Whitney Dunn had 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals, while Ariella Henigan added 10 points, four assists and three steals.
Wednesday’s boys games
Austin 67, Chicago Academy 50: Ty Freeman led Austin with 29 points, five rebounds and four steals, while Zaquan Young had 14 points and eight rebounds.
Kenwood 107, King 26: Kenwood rolled behind Darrin Ames (29 points, 5 assists, 4 steals), Trey Pettigrew (28 points, 7 assists, 4 steals), Darius Robinson (21 points, 5 3-pointers, 10 assists), Davius Loury (16 points, 10 assists, 10 rebounds), Bryce Heard (13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists) and Solomon Moseley (17 rebounds, 6 blocks).
Longwood 40, Gary West Side (Ind.) 31: Senior guard Trey Jones filled up the stat sheet for the Panthers in the win with 10 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Junior guard Jayden Small had 12 points and four rebounds, while junior forward NaShawn Brown added eight points and eight rebounds.
Prosser 90, Legal Prep 72: Prosser picked up its first win as Delfonta Sewell had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds, Jamarion Thomas scored 17 and had four assists, and Vontrell King and Donte Brown each had 16 points.
Tuesday’s boys games
Brooks 58, Lindblom 55: Brooks had big games from Jerrick Moore (15 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists), Anthony Vaval (15 points, 5 rebounds) and Joaquin Cassell (12 points, 6 rebounds). Lindblom was led by Zach Royster (19 points, 14 rebounds, 2 steals) and Je’Shawn Stevenson (18 points, 2 rebounds).
Clark 61, Dunbar 46: Clark had three players with double-doubles: Suliman Agiste (10 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks), Mikqwon Jones (15 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals) and Mikell Jones (12 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks). Katrell Weekly added 10 points, five rebounds and two steals.
Lane 69, Bulls Prep 33: Ethan Grunebaum had 16 points to lead Lane.
Perspectives-Leadership 63, Phillips 60: Sophomore Tim Handy had a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals) as Perspectives (3-2) won on the road. Senior Jabari Sanders had 16 points and three rebounds, while senior JaQuwan Payton added 15 points and four rebounds.
Phoenix 54, Kelly 51: Ki’Aon Williams (18 points), Jamon Gooden (17 points) and Vincent Sauseda (13 points) led Phoenix.
Solorio 65, Jaurez 24: Solorio (4-1) won its home opener as Christian Sanchez had 20 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals. Also contributing were Donovan Jones with 15 points, seven assists and three steals, Jeremy Hall with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Leon Lopez with 10 points.
Monday’s boys games
Chicago Academy 82, Intrinsic Downtown 46: Noah Salman scored 28 and Anthony Zepeda had 26 points for Chicago Academy. Isaac Gonzalez also reached double figures with 11 points.
